It never came in our mind before that a Korean heroic drama about Japanese occupation was in difficulty to cast its leading actor.
Yes, Japan with its powerful economy is the place where many Hallyu stars received amazing popularity and also the country where they held sold-out concerts and fan meetings.
Probably that’s the reason why some actors was reluctant to play a Korean hero against Japanese occupation.
That’s what Bridal Mask‘s director, PD Yoon Sung Sik, said during the drama press conference event on May 23.
He said :’ Bridal Mask was already in pre-production since October 2011 and it’s a fact that I faced difficulty to cast the actors. Although this drama is more a super hero genre than a historical , but because the drama’s setting is in Japanese occupation era, there’s an ‘anti Japanese’ spirit there. So, many Hallyu stars hesitated to play in this drama’.
He continued :’ Actually, at first I wanted to cast actor in age of 30s but because I had difficulty to find it, I started to think that maybe it’s better to cast actor in his 20s. The real person in the story was also a young man in his 20s when he started sacrificed himself with his own blood for Korean independence. Moreover, I also thought that it’s the perfect time to make a new star and then Joo Won came in my mind’.
Joo Won indeed plays the leading actor in Bridal Mask.
And Joo Won who also attended the press conference event expressed his opinion on that matter :’I never thought about that kind of things. Hallyu popularity is important but the more important thing for me is how to develop my acting. When I heard that stories (many Hallyu stars hesitate to play Bridal Mask), I wasn’t agree’.
Shin Hyun Joon, also the cast of Bridal Mask, who sat beside Joo Won added :’ I also heard that story. Joo Won is surely worthy of admiration. He’s a young actor but he never think about Hallyu and popularity. He only thinks about how to make his acting better’.
Yes, couldn’t agree more !
Besides it, Kang Ji Hwan who played leading man in Capital Scandal (also a drama about the fight against Japanese occupation) is still doing fine and still popular in Japan.
Bridal Mask debuts May 30.
